Sometimes the ingredients for a successful business venture extend beyond the product itself.
Such was the case for Papa Dean's Popcorn, the gourmet popcorn retailer in Alamo Heights. The company, which today has about $400,000 in revenue and employs five people fulltime, realized that it needed help managing its burgeoning customer base.

What’s popping? Pink or blue popcorn as birth announcements? That’s just one use for the flavored popcorn at Papa Dean’s Popcorn, 6484 N. New Braunfels Ave., according to owner Tara Staglik.
The small bags are also available in school colors and colors to match different party decor.
"One bride used bright colored popcorn to substitute for the going-away rice throw because she wanted to be able to see the popcorn better. In the obligatory photo, as she explained,the rice or birdseed often looks like a smudge on the photograph," according to Staglik.
